The lot features an incredibly rare original court document from October 3rd, 1881 in regards to the case against Frank Stilwell, known Cochise Cowboy, for his robbery of the Wells Fargo & Co. Stagecoach, signed by Judge Wells Spicer; Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona. The document features a dictation of a motion to reimburse the expenses accrued by the witnesses to be present in the court room for the trial of Frank Stilwell in relation to the Wells Fargo & Co. stagecoach robbery. The document features Judge Wells Spicer's signature on the rear of the document and includes the J.O. Dunbar , Treasurer of Cochise County, A.T. notary stamp on the back of the document. The document lists all the witnesses present that day. Frank C. Stilwell (1856 – March 20, 1882) was an outlaw Cowboy who killed at least two men in Cochise County during 1877–82. Both killings were considered to have been self-defense. For four months he was a deputy sheriff in Tombstone, Arizona Territory for Cochise County Sheriff Johnny Behan. Stilwell owned interests in several mines and various businesses, including a saloon, a wholesale liquor business, a stage line, and at his death livery stables in Charleston and Bisbee. He was also a partner in a Bisbee-area saloon with ex-Texas Ranger Pete Spence. The condition of this Arizona Territory document is well preserved with a tear in the right hand upper corner and some browning to the pages consistent with the age of the document and shows a well preserved overall condition.
