For your consideration is a Rare "Harper's Pictorial History of the Civil War", Complete in 2 Leather Volumes, by Alfred H. Guernsey and Henry M. Alden, Star Publishing Company, Chicago, IL., 1894. First McDonnell Edition. This work is profusely illustrated with both in-text, full-page, and double-page woodcut engravings, over 1000 illustrations, maps, and portraits. It features war correspondence and was published shortly after the end of the Civil War in two volumes. This first McDonnell edition was published in 1894 and was based on the original edition complete with all illustrations. Illustrations include battles scenes, sea battles, portraits, maps, battle plans and schemes, weapons and firearms, and a large colour four-panel pull-out illustrated map of the parts of the Southern States in volume one. These 2 Volumes tell the story of the American Civil War beginning with the birth of our nation and ending with the April 15, 1865 Assassination Death of President Abraham Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth. These are large books, featuring brown pebble textured leather bound gold gilt stamped hardcovers. Covers are in poor to fair condition exhibiting moisture damage, scuffing, fading, and foxing. Intact pages exhibit age tanning, foxing throughout. Each volume measures 11.25"W x 16.375"L x 1"D, combined weight is 13lb, 10oz.
