For your consideration is a Rare Original Jean-Jacques Henner Oil on Canvas Young Red-Haired Girl, signed, circa 1872-1900. From private collection. Jean-Jacques Henner (1829-1905) was a French painter noted for his use of sfumato and chiaroscuro in painting nudes, religious subjects and portraits. Henner's palette was notable for its rich, warm tones, especially copper-red and honey-yellow colours for hair, and a strong emphasis on shadows, creating a soft, ethereal, and somewhat mystical quality in his paintings. These warm, vibrant colours were frequently used, especially for the striking red hair of his female subjects, giving a gleaming, flame-like appearance. He used techniques like sfumato (soft, blended colours) and chiaroscuro (strong light/dark contrasts) to achieve these effects, though specific paint pigments aren't detailed. Henner’s first red-haired woman was depicted as a flutist in "Idylle". Throughout his career, the artist used red as a colour and as his signature. This colour played a crucial role in his paintings and in his artistic trajectory as a means to distinguish himself from other artists and to balance his palette. Besides "Idylle", many of Henner’s other paintings portray women adorned with red hair. The artist consistenly used the colour, irrespective of the subject of the painting, or whether or not it was a portrait. This stunning oil on canvas is in nicely preserved condition. Gold gilt gesso wood frame exhibits cracks in gesso, scuffing to edges. Visible art measures 18.25"W x 24"L, frame is 25.5"W x 30.5"L x 2.5"D. Combined weight is 9lb, 10oz.
