This is an original, rare full mammoth plate card photography of Cheyenne Plenty Bird in Sweat Lodge by L.A. Huffman from circa 1890 from an ex-museum Eastern Montana collection; ex-Heritage Auction collection. This is likely the only full version of this silver gelatin photograph with signature ever offered to the public. All other examples show the sweat lodge more cropped in with this example showing all the detail on either side of the sweat lodge, as well as a signature in the bottom right corner as well as fine detail. Laton Alton Huffman (1854-1931) is considered one of the most important Montana photographers, while he was born in Winneshiek County, Iowa, he spent most of his life photographing his Montana home. He arrived in Miles City, Montana Territory in December of 1879 and became the Fort Keogh post photographer. He spent his years documenting the historic changes happening in Montana as well as the lives of Montana’s Native American tribes. This piece appears to be an early original circa 1890 mammoth plate or boudoir cabinet card silver gelatin photograph and is hand written on the back, “#21 - #33 – Young Plenty Bird, Cheyenne, in his sweat lodge – L.A. Huffman - $3750.00”. The condition of this mammoth cabinet card is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage and shows some slight browning to the cabinet card consistent with age but otherwise shows a well preserved condition. The cabinet card features a wonderfully and professionally crafted construction that shows a mammoth size cabinet card with a scene of Young Plenty Bird sitting down in an opened up sweat lodge with his pile of rocks baking in the sun and two tee pee's or tipi's in the distance, with Buffalo / Bison meat on the line. The measurements of this cabinet card is 7" x 11". The collective weight of this mammoth cabinet card is U4oz.
