Presented in this lot is a Rare Mughal Empire Islamic Silver Abalone Rice Serving Spoon, circa 1800-1900, procured in Lashkargah, Afghanistan, once historically called Bost or Boost and later renamed. Was once the site of a Ghaznavid palace and soldiers' bazaar near the confluence of the Helmand and Arghandab rivers in southeastern Afghanistan. Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and Snite Museum of Art, the University of Notre Dame, including African, Afghan and Asian artifacts. In true Mughal fashion, cutlery was made of gold and silver, gems and stones. This serving spoon has a abalone shell bowl wrapped in silver, a long silver shaft with an imprint of a hand at the neck, a gold ring separating the hand from the shaft. The spoon exhibits dents and scratches on the shaft and back, cracks observed on abalone shell bowl. Measures 5.25"W x 12.25"L, weight 10oz
