Featured in this lot we have a Rare Original Mettlach Porcelain German Beer Stein without lid, "A Good Pour", circa 1906, 1/2 liter. The text "Gut einsschenken" (Fill it well) and "Voll Maas hat Gott lieb" (God loves a full stein). The golden age of Mettlach began in 1880 and lasted thirty years until 1910. Impressed numbers on bottom: "1909" is the PUG (print-under-glaze) form/shape and "06" signified 1906 as the year of production; decoration number "726" Geschutzt. In 1886 Mettlach initiated use of a transfer technique for decorating a less-costly line of products based upon a process employed by the English. This involved the use of lithographed designs on metal plates, which then transferred the full-color design to a paper “transfer.” The stein body was first glazed and fired. The transfer was then applied, followed by another clear glaze and final firing. There are also a number of Mettlach PUG steins on which the transfer consisted of only an outline of the design, and the colors were handpainted. Unlike other Mettlach lines, PUG decorations are flat on the body and smooth to the touch, and the steins have a glossy glaze finish. This antique Mettlach porcelain stein is rare as that most Mettlach steins were ordered with lids. This has an elongated body for adding a music box in its base. This stein is in very nice condition, no marring observed. Measures 6"H x 5.5"W, 3.25" diameter mouth, 3.75" diameter base, weighs 1lb, 8oz.
