The lot features a Sioux Native American Indian beaded and porcupine quilled tobacco pouch. The piece is comprised of brain-tanned buckskin and is beautifully beaded in traditional geometric Sioux patterns and colors. The beads are all old glass trade seed beads with a chalk white to greasy white background with pattern in cobalt, Cheyenne pink, red white heart and corn yellow. The bag shows predominately sinew sewing with some trade thread and hide glue. The bottom shows long brain-tanned frilly buckskin fringes. Below the beadwork shows classic 19th Century porcupine quill geometric quillwork with colors of red, blue and yellow on strips of parfleche rawhide with greasy blue seed beads in between. There are two solid brass hawk trade bells of an old age as well as a strip of dark blue wool stroud trade clothe on the top with original hide tie. The beadwork goes along the front ad around the sides but not the back. Noted by the consignor as being a rare 19th Century example, please examine the piece for your own representation of age. Overall well kept condition with supple hide, a little bit of quill loss and little to no bead loss. Provenance: From the ex-Ted Levy collection. Measures overall 38”L with strap and fringes by 6”W.
