For your consideration is a Rare First Edition of "The Life and Adventures of Kit Carson" by De Witt C. Peters, 1858, W. R. C. Clark & Co. publishers. This biography written by U.S. Army surgeon De Witt Clinton Peters stands as one of the most critical foundation documents of early Western Americana, directly cementing the legendary status of frontiersman Christopher "Kit" Carson. The book chronicles Carson’s multi-faceted life as a teenage runaway, wilderness fur trapper, mountain man, government scout, and military officer. It highlights his pivotal work guiding Lieutenant Colonel John C. Frémont's mapping expeditions across the Oregon Trail and California, which originally catapulted Carson into national fame. The narrative includes extensive descriptions of his complex interactions, marriages, battles, and roles as a U.S. Indian Agent with various Western tribes, including the Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Navajo. Beyond biography, it serves as an early geographical record, capturing the scenery, rivers, wildlife, and natural wonders of the interior wilderness of the U.S. territories. The leather bound gold gilt stamped illustrated hardcover is in preserved condition, front board detached, scuffing observed on edges. Intact marbled top, bottom and front edge pages exhibit age tanning and foxing. Measures 6"W x 9.375"L x 2"D, weight is 2lb, 10oz.
