For sale in this lot is an extremely Rare Winchester 1894 Deluxe Pistol Grip and Checkered Saddle Ring Carbine in .30 WCF (.30-30) caliber, serial number 788897, made in 1916. Very few Winchester carbines were special ordered from the factory with non-standard features. On those few carbines that were special ordered, the more common special features would be a half magazine or made without provision for the saddle ring. From a collecting standpoint, one of the most desirable and least often special features on a carbine would be a deluxe model with pistol grip stock. Not only does this example have a pistol grip, but it also has checkering on both forend and pistol grip as well as a checkered steel shotgun butt plate instead of the curved standard carbine butt plate. This is the classic, early 1894 Carbine that was popular with the Klondike gold seekers, Texas Rangers, cowboys, ranchers, big game hunters and Mexican Revolutionaries. One of the best of the Jonathan Browning designs, this model is still respected and used today. This fine 102 year old example still retains a fine bore and tight action. There is also good blue on the loading gate, barrel and magazine tube. The butt stock and forearm show fairly heavy handling and hunting wear with the checkering on the forearm worn but all visible. There is an old repair to a crack in the wrist area and the pistol grip cap appears to be a replacement. The barrel shows correct clear Winchester address markings and patent dates and still retains a fine bore with good rifling throughout. The upper tang also has correct MODEL 1894ó over Winchesteró etc. markings. The rear sight is a desirable King patent heavy full buckhorn sight that was popular in the West. The receiver is mostly an aged gray with fine screws. An iconic carbine with very unusual and rarely encountered features from the turbulent days of the early part of the 20th century. This carbine recently came out of Montana. The rifle qualifies as a Curio & Relic Long Gun, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 788897.
