This is an original Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army revolver, serial number 33 which was attributed to being in the U.S. Interior Department Order #5777 shipment in 1883 to the Rosebud Indian Agency and issued to Rosebud Agency Police member Buffalo Horse, a Brule Lakota Sioux. This example has been reviewed and comes with paperwork from The Guns of History with the Rosebud Agency Police information and illustrations of the Buffalo Horse markings on the gun. The revolver exhibits a factory nickel finish with two-piece factory walnut grips and 7 ½ inch round barrel marked in a single line, “E. REMINGTON & SONS ILION N.Y. U.S.A.”, with a six-shot fluted cylinder and is chambered in .44 Remington cartridge. It is well documented that in 1883 Remington accepted a contract and delivered approximately 639 nickel plated guns to the United States Interior Department for issue to Indian Police and other Western reservations, such as the Rosebud Agency and Pine Ridge Agency. There are two other examples of nickel plated Remington 1875 revolvers that have sold over the years that were also attributed as being in this shipment, the Remington 1875 serial number 718 shipped to the Indian Police on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota Territory by the U.S.I.D. in 1883 which sold at auction by Heritage in June 2022 for $15,000 (w/ bp) and the U.S.I.D. marked Remington 1875 in nickel serial number 412 which was mentioned as being part of the shipment and sold at Morphy in their April 2019 sale for $5,760 (w/ bp). It is noted that once the Remington 1875’s reached serial number 12,000 they reverted back to serial number 1. This revolver was examined by The Guns of History, Wendell Grangaard and found to have Togia Lakota language marks across the gun including Buffalo Horse, Rosebud, Buffalo Horse Brule as shown on illustrations 1 through 4. Buffalo Horse was a Brule Lakota Sioux, born in 1827. He grew up with Hollow Horn Bear and was a member of Hollow Horn Bear’s Band of Sicangu Orphan Band of the Brule Lakota. The two fought during the Indian Wars at Little Bighorn and followed Sitting Bull into the Big Horn Mountains, later turning to the Spotted Tail Agency where they surrendered in the early summer of 1876 (Buffalo Horse and Hollow Horn Bear). Later Spotted Tail Agency was established as Rosebud Agency and Hollow Horn Bear was appointed the head of the Indian Police force with Buffalo Horse becoming one of the officers under his command. In June 1883, under the authority of Order Number 5777, thirty Remington 1875 Revolvers were issued to the Rosebud Agency Police Force in Dakota Territory from the U.S. Interior Department shipment, with this serial number 33 believed to be issued to Buffalo Horse and carried during his service. Marked under the grips with serial number 33 and on the trigger guard 44, for .44 caliber. Comes with the Guns of History paperwork and illustrations. Antique firearm NO FFL.
