This is an original gouache signed hand painted artwork by renowned Navajo artist Robert Chee (1937-1971), untitled showing a Navajo man leading a pack horse. Robert Chee (Navajo, 1937-1971), also known as Hashke-Yil-Cale, was born in St. Michaels, Arizona in 1937 with his artistic talent being recognized as early as age 10-years old. Chee was enrolled in the Intermountain Indian School, where he studied under Allan Houser. He was a member of Tewa Enterprises (around 1951). He is best known for his gouache paintings as well as his work as an illustrator, author and weaver. Chee's work can be found in public museum collections including the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Museum of Northern Arizona, Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, Arizona State Museum, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, the Penticton Gallery, and the National Museum of the American Indian. This example shows a Navajo man leading a pack horse or mule along the Southern Plains with rich detail and is signed lower right R. CHEE. The painting is matted and framed with no glass and is in good overall condition. Frame measures 21-inches by 17.5-inches. Visible art area is approx.. 9-inches by 9.25-inches. Robert Chee’s artwork is in high demand with various gouache paintings selling well at auction such as the example sold by Jackson Hole Art Auction in February 2026 for $3,437.50, the similar size piece sold by Broward Auction in December 2021 for $2,750, and piece sold by Santa Fe Art Auction in April 2019 for $1,875; an upward trend.
