Presented in this lot is "Rocky Mountain Life Or Startling Scenes And Perilous Adventures In Far West", by Rufus Sage, 1889, Edward Canby publisher. This is a first-person travelogue by Rufus B. Sage recounting a multi-year journey through the Rocky Mountains, border prairies, and western frontiers. Sage joins emigrant and fur-trading parties, traversing from Independence and Westport to the Columbia and Oregon country, with incursions into Santa Fe trade routes and upriver journeys. The narrative blends careful observations of geography, geology, flora and fauna, climate, and the everyday life of frontiersmen with vivid episodes of buffalo hunts, bear encounters, storms, river fords, and desert traverses. It also records interactions with numerous Native American tribes—the Pawnees, Osages, Crows, Sioux, Cheyennes, Arapahos, Navijos, Utes, and others—along with traders, missionaries, and soldiers. The work serves as a rich historical source on mid-19th-century westward expansion, emigration, and frontier life, alternating between dramatic adventure and practical guidance for travelers and settlers. Rufus B. Sage (1817-1893) was a prominent 19th-century American writer, journalist, political campaign editor, and mountain man. He is most celebrated for providing some of the earliest, most detailed eyewitness descriptions of the American West before the mid-century pioneer migrations. Driven by a desire to explore the uncharted territories between Missouri and the Pacific Ocean, Sage put together a small party and ventured west in 1841. For three years, he wandered the Rocky Mountains, embedding himself with fur trappers, Native American tribes, traders, and hunters. The brown cloth bound gold gilt illustrated hardcover is in preserved condition, exhibits fading, scuffing and stains. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing throughout. Measures 14oz.
