For sale is the historical souvenir album, "Scenes in Glacier National Park hand-colored" by T.J. Hileman; twelve hand colored, mounted photographs of noted areas in the park. Hileman was an American photographer born in Manor Township, Armstrong County Pennsylvania, who is renowned for his photos of Glacier National Park in Montana, and the Native American Blackfoot people. Appointed the official photographer for the Great Northern Railway in 1924, Hileman took photos of Glacier National Park and Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, Canada, moving bulky camera equipment by packhorse, even at times perching on a narrow ledge to get just the right image on film. He also photographed the Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton, Alberta, which was built by the railway. In 1985, the Glacier Natural History Association purchased over one thousand of Hileman’s nitrate negatives. The Association also owns 32 of Hileman’s photographic albums containing more than 2000 prints. These treasures remain a lasting tribute to Glacier’s most prolific photographer. The hand coloured photographs are typical of the work Hileman was noted for. Not only did he capture impressive scenic images, but he documented the visits of important individuals to the area, his work was reproduced on countless postcards and in brochures, periodicals and books.
The album is in good condition with slight tears and fluid stains on the covers and some pages, foxing noted on the pages which is normal for the age, but no damages are noted on any of the photographs.
