For sale in this lot is a 19th century roe deer mount from Schloss Eckartsau. Eckartsau was a favorite hunting lodge (schloss) of the Habsburg royal family, and was maintained under the House of Habsburg-Lorraine from 1760 until the Imperial family was exiled to Switzerland in 1919. Prominent Habsburg residents include Francis Stephan von Lothringen - Husband to Habsburg's sole female ruler, Maria Theresa, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and Austria's last Imperial couple Charles I of Austria, and Princess Zita of Bourbon-Parma. It was commonplace at Schloss Eckartsau to invite distinguished guest for a hunt with the emperor, and to label the mount with the name of the dignitary which took the animal, in this case, Dachenhausen. The mount shows good condition, and is mounted to a contemporary bronze plaque. The mount measures 5 3/4" wide, 5 1/8" deep, and 13 3/8" tall.
