Featured in this lot is a Bronze Meditating Seated Buddha, Laos, circa 18th - 19th century. Seated on an elevated plinth, in the subduing Mara position, and with the head covered in hair curls and domed ushnisha with a tall ornament finial. This technique demonstrates the influence of Khmer art which started to emerge from previous styles, and spread throughout surrounding countries. Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and Snite Museum of Art, the University of Notre Dame, including African, Afghan and Asian artifacts. The image of Buddha is depicted seated in meditation in the 'Virasana' position, with one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The left hand is resting palm-open on his lap, while the right hand forms the 'Bhumisparsa' mudra, or Calling the Earth to Witness, gesture. The Buddha is portrayed with a peaceful countenance, with well defined features, wearing a monastic garment which appears diagonally covering the left shoulders, with a wide end fold draped to his mid section. The head is covered in tightly curled hair surmounted by a hemispherical 'Ushnisha', rising to a tall ornament finial symbolizing his high level of spiritual development. Other features include incised eyes, smiling mouth, a small band separates the forehead from the hairline, hands with elongated fingers, elongated earlobes resting on the shoulders, and well-carved foot and toes. The casting is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered nicely. The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful. The bottom edge of the plinth exhibits damage though damage does not affect the stability of the statue. Measures 6"W x 4"D x 10.5"H, weight 4lb, 2oz approximate.
