For your consideration is a set of US Army Camel Corp Brass Bells from civil war era, 1855-1866. Each is decorated with US Army eagle and shield insignia with stars and sunbursts. The iron clapper creates a remarkably beautiful tone. The first of two is a sand cast brass bell, measuring 4" high and 4 3/4" across the bell opening, made in the mid-19th Century. The brass has a nice patina, there is a chip on the rim of the bell, and a small hole at the top. The second of the set, includes a leather strap and measure approximately 3" high and 3 3/4" across the bell opening. This bell, leather strap and metal buckle are well preserved with signs of age and wear that include original patina, discoloration and soiling. The United States Camel Corps was a mid-nineteenth century experiment by the United States Army in using camels as pack animals in the Southwestern United States. Camel Bells were originally made to hang around the Camel's neck and were later used by cavalry during the Civil War. Included in this set is a packet of collectors information about the items.
