Featured in this lot is a Native American Shoshone tribe, beaded cradleboard papoose. This beautifully crafted cradleboard is made of canvas and wood back and features a Morning Glory flower pattern made of regular and cut beads. The Morning Glory flower features a deep blue color with lighter blue accents, while the other flower features grayish pink, light blue, orange and purple beads and the leaves have a range of light green and deep green beads. The front features white, brain tanned buckskin leather ties. Brain tanning is an almost forgotten method and is rarely practiced today. Brain tanned leather is tanned in the juices and chemicals of the animal’s own blood. It is a traditional process in some indigenous American communities that has a long history behind it. On the back of the cradleboard, it is adorned with a braided fringe with orange, light blue, and pink large beads. Overall this cradleboard papoose shows great quality and craftsmanship, with no signs of obvious damage. It measures 16 1/2" wide at the top and 4" wide at the bottom, with a height of 31 3/4".
