Featured in this lot is this Vintage Original Signed Egyptian Papyrus Artwork, "The Final Judgement", by J. Mourad, circa mid to late century, framed. In the three scenes from the Book of the Dead (version from ~1300 BCE) Hunefer is taken into the judgment hall by the jackal-headed Anubis. The next scene is the weighing of his heart, with Ammut awaiting the result and Thoth recording. In the Egyptian Book of the Dead, the final judgment involved weighing the deceased's heart against the feather of Ma'at, symbolizing truth and justice. If the heart was lighter than the feather, the soul passed to the afterlife. If it was heavier, the heart was devoured by the demon Ammut, and the soul was doomed to destruction.
Many Egyptian gods were depicted with human bodies and animal heads, reflecting their association with specific animals or their ability to embody different aspects of nature. Egyptian mythology, as depicted in this artwork, was documented and depicted through hieroglyphs, a complex writing system that served as a visual record of their beliefs and rituals.
The artwork features many of the divinities associated with the underworld including the "ferryman", scarabs, jackal-headed Anubis, falcon-headed Horas, Kherty, Isis, Ra.
