Featured in this lot is a Signed Grover Cleveland Arizona Territory Homestead Quit Claim Deed, 1886. Provenance: From the Tombstone Western Heritage Museum in Tombstone, Arizona. The first National Homestead Act, passed in 1862, entitled heads of households or persons at least 21 years of age to file for 160 acres otherwise sold by the government at $1.25 per acre, or for 80 acres otherwise sold by the government at $2.50 per acre. The rnore expensive land was that which lay within the limits of railroad grants. In states, railroad grants extended 20 miles to either side of track right-of-ways. In territories such as Arizona, the grants extended 40 miles to either side of the trackage. Arizona Territory was created in 1863 from the division of the New Mexico Territory. Statehood occured in 1912. The Quit Claim Deed certificate number is 75, application number is 255. It is addressed to John K. Gregory and specifies "the east half of the north east quarter of section thirty four in township fifteen south of range thirty two east of Gila and Salt River Meridian in Arizona Territory, containing eighty acres." It is signed by then 22nd President of the United States, Grover Cleveland, in two places at the bottom, January 20, 1886. The U.S. General Land Office seal is on the bottom left corner. The U.S. General Land Office (GLO) was a federal agency from 1812 to 1946 responsible for surveying, platting, and selling public lands in the expanding United States. Created in 1812 to manage public domain lands, it oversaw westward expansion and administered acts like the Homestead Act. The reverse of the certificate has the filling and recording stamp from the "Recorder's Office Tombstone, Cachise Co., A. T." It was "filed and recorded at the request of Bank of Tombstone December 12th A. D. 1890 at 2.30 P. M." Tombstone Western Heritage Museum label affixed to the front of clear plastic protective sleeve, "Quit Claim Deed signed by President Cleveland", museum code, "D-038". Museum code handwriten at top right corner as well. The quit claim deed is in well preserved condition, age tanning and slight foxing noted. Certificate folded measures 3.5"W x 8"L, as displayed 10"W x 16"L. Sleeve is 11.375"W x 17.25"L. Combined weight is U6.
