The image of the American West grew from the late 19th century into the early and mid 20th century with artists like Joseph Henry Sharp, Philip Goodwin, Frederic Remington, Bill Gollings and Charles Russell. This painting reflects the passion and raw power seen in similar paintings from Miller's contemporaries. The image of a cowboy on a bucking horse connotes the wild, untamed West of the early 1900s, an image that continues to stir the heart. Miller's cowboy is holding the reins while sitting precariously sideways in his saddle, his scowl is intense, his hat has flown off, his right arm extended upwards with a quirt in hand. The horse's wildeyed expression intent on throwing his nemesis, has its head cocked opposite to its body. Possibly in a nod to Charlie Russell, a bison skull is seen to the left of the main event. This professionally mounted oil on canvas has age related craquelure, slash exhibited on left middle close to the edge. The vintage silver and gold gilt wood frame exhibits scratches and scuffing.
