Featured in this lot is a Signed Mughal Persian Miniature Painting on Tile, circa 18th-19th century. The Mughal Empire was an early modern empire based in South Asia between the 16th and 19th centuries. For some two hundred years, the empire stretched from the outer fringes of the Indus RIver Basin in the west, northern Afghanistan in the northwest, and Kashmir in the north, to the highlands of present-day Assam and Bangladesh in the east, and the uplands of the Deccan Plateau in South India. Mughal painting is a style of painting confined to miniatures either as book illustrations or as single works to be kept in albums. It emerged from Persian miniature painting (itself partly of Chinese origin) and developed in the court of the Mughal Empire of the 16th to 18th centuries. Battles, legendary stories, hunting scenes, wildlife, royal life, mythology, as well as other subjects have all been frequently depicted in paintings. Subjects are rich in variety and include portraits, events and scenes from court life, wild life and hunting scenes, and illustrations of battles. The Persian tradition of richly decorated borders framing the central image was continued, as was a modified form of the Persian convention of an elevated viewpoint. This painting is set on thin tile, the central figure being an older man of nobility as evidenced by his flowing Mughal jama with patka and peshwaz with Aughi embroidered mojari on his feet while he wears a turban in the style of Bahadur Shah Zafar, last Mughal emperor. The tile is centred on a purple coloured cloth, the highly ornate gold gilt wood frame is richly decorated in the Persian tradition including the polychrome, unfinished frame edges which feature a geometric pattern. Signature is on the bottom right corner of tile. Slight scuffing observed on the rear of the frame, no other obvious marring noted. Visible art measures 4"W x 7.75"L, frame is 10"W x 12.25"L
