For your consideration is this signed Christmas card etching by Richard E. Bishop (1887-1975). Born in Syracuse, New York, Richard Evett Bishop graduated in 1909 with a Master of Engineering degree from Cornell University. After retiring from his first career in engineering, he turned his perfectionist engineer mind to portraying the wing action of birds in flight as accurately as possible, becoming a noted etcher and painter, as well as writer. Unique among his voluminous output are his Christmas card etchings. Initially beginning as something for him and his wife to send, he eventually started making them for his friends to send out also. Some of the etchings are signed in pencil, as this one is, all the Christmas card etchings say somewhere on the print,"Merry Christmas From_________". This undated Christmas card etching was done for Emma L. Whittemore. About 30 of Bishop's Christmas card etchings, signed "from Helen and Dick Bishop", are in the permanent collection at the National Gallery of Art. This etching, attractively matted and framed, measures about 4" x 6" (10" x 12" framed). The etching does have a small 1" rip at the bottom in the center but is otherwise in excellent condition. It displays very well.
