This is a beautiful Sioux beaded Indian hide doll with appraisal by Butterfields from the ex-collection of Stephen Johnston. The doll is comprised of tanned hide that is thread sewn with a parfleche back of the head. The doll shows a muslin canvas trade clothe body covered with the Indian tanned buckskin dress, high-top moccasins, belt and earrings. The dress is sewn with older glass trade seed beads in a classic Sioux geometric pattern with colors of greasy white, cobalt, semi-transparent lilac, greasy light blue white heart, medium green, and corn yellow. The entire doll has a nice yellow ocher / ochre mineral pigment paint. The earrings show greasy yellow wound glass trade beadsa with wound glass greasy light blue pony beads. The head has a fancy edge of greasy Cheyenne pink white hearts. This doll and the doll in the last lot were sold at auction in November 2000 for $1,000 where they were listed as “1880’s Sioux Handmade Dolls Finest Bead Work”. The pair was appraised by Butterfields in July 2000 by Mara Escajeda for $800-$1200 + GC, marked as Pair of Plains beaded dolls. Also included are correspondence between Stephen Johnston and Hughey & Sherlock talking about the item being of a late-19th Century age or 1870-1899. Provenance: From the Stephen Johnston collection formerly from Darby, Montana and Foster City, CA; purchased from Hughey & Sherlock at auction in November 2000, appraised by Butterfields in July 2000. Doll measures 12.25”H by 8.5”W. Appears to be a nice vintage doll, exact age unknown.
