Featured in this lot are two, Sioux beaded turtle / lizard umbilical cord fetishes from the late 20th century. A traditional Native American talisman fashioned of beaded leather, known as an umbilical amulet or fetish, is used by Plains tribes, such as the Sioux and Crow, to retain a newborn's dried umbilical cord. These amulets are designed to protect the baby’s health and promote longevity, rooted in the belief that they connect the child’s life to Mother Earth. The first shows a predominantly orange colored turtle / lizard with orange, white and green beads with a stripe design down its back and two green cross like symbols on the left and right side of the back. Two green eyes are present on the all white head. The second lizard / turtle shows a predominantly green back with a blue and black skinny stripe down the back. Blue stripes bordered by yellow are scattered around the back in a repeating pattern. The arms, head and tail show a yellow and green repeating stripe pattern. Both fetishes show good condition overall with little to no wear present and no signs of damage noted. The first, mostly orange one measures 6 3/4" L x 3 7/8" W x 2" D, while the second, mostly green one measures 7 1/2" L x 2 7/8" W x 2 1/8" D. They have a collective weight of 123.1 grams.
