This is a beautiful, colorful pipe stem with porcupine quill and beadwork with pewter inlaid catlanite peace pipe attributed to the Sioux Native American Indians. The bowl appears to be a late 1800s early 1900s example while the stem appears to be a later piece, said to be more like the mid-1900s or later example. The wood stem appears to be ash, showing a long, wide and large size with painted surface with a banded design in green, blue, purple, yellow, and red on the top and green along the bottom. The top shows bands, Maltese cross and heart patterns in brass covered metal tacks as well as two hide glued strips of Indian tanned hide with geometric porcupine quill quillwork in natural cream / white, red, blue and yellow on parfleche remnant strips of rawhide showing some of the old polychrome painted finish. The strips are bordered in semi-transparent and iridescent Czech trade beads. Sinew and trade tread sewing. The consignor noted the back of the stem being painted in green indicative of other documented government painted dark green paint, known amongst collectors as “reservation green”. The pipe bowl shows a classic “T” design, carved of solid catalinite red pipestone with four inlaid bands of pewter, having cleaned bowl and stem area. Please examine both for your representation of age. The stem by itself measures 31”L x 2 1/8”W. Bowl is 5.5” x 3.5” x 1”. Together they are 35”L.*
