This is a fantastic, late-19th Century Sioux Native American Indian polychrome painted dance drum. The drum was said to have been collected from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation of South Dakota and comes from the Cyrus Eaton Collection from London, England. This circa 1880-1890’s large drum shows a painted mineral pigment finish with predominantly yellow coloring on both sides, exhibiting a four-point morning star in blue on one side. The reverse side shows concentric circles in green and yellow and was likely the side used for pounding, due to its paint loss and hide coloring showing through. The original ties strap is still attached. The piece shows wetted and stretched hide with hide lacing / rawhide crisscross sewing over a bent wood hoop. Overall, the piece shows a good condition for its very early age, with no visible tears or holes and proper signs of true age and Native use. Overall, the drum measures 23 inches across by 4.5 inches thick.
