This is an excellent parfleche rawhide knife sheath with outstanding polychrome painted from the Sioux Native American Indians of the Northern Plains dating to the 19th Century. The piece features a polychrome rawhide knife sheath which is tied with Indian tanned hide and is artfully adorned with original mineral pigment polychrome painted surface on both the front and back in a geometric pattern showing colors of red, blue, yellow, green, and natural all outlined in a dark brown / black. Provenance: The ex-collection of Ken Canfield (1941-2006) a renowned Santa Fe, New Mexico dealer who established Canfield Gallery in the 1980’s and Morning Star Gallery. The piece was purchased from Canfield by a collector who has since passed in the 1980-1990’s and is being offered by their family. Several pieces from the ex-collection of Ken Canfield were offered for sale at Heritage Auctions March 2020 sale including an Arapaho Painted Parfleche Case c. 1900 which sold for $3,000 (shown with BP) lending to the originality and authenticity of the piece offered in this sale. This is truly a wonderful example in well preserved condition. Measures overall 11.25”L by 3 5/8”W not including the hide ties.
