Featured in this lot is this engraving by artist Charles Henry Mottram of the original work titled "The Stag at Bay" by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer born in 1802 and died in 1873 and originally circa 1840 and being over 150 years old. The engraving is wonderfully and professionally crafted engraving that depicts a stag fending off two wolves with one pinned in the water and the other snarling at it. The engraving is marked on the front as follows: Sir Edwin Landseer, R.A. Pinx - The Stag at Bay - Cha. Mottram Sculp. Sir Edwin Landseer (1802–1873) was a renowned British artist celebrated for his romantic and highly detailed portrayals of animals, often imbued with human emotion and symbolism. His works were widely admired in Victorian England, not only as original paintings but also through fine engravings that brought his art to a broader public. Among his notable engraving collaborators was Charles Mottram, a skilled British engraver known for his intricate and expressive technique. Mottram’s engravings of Landseer’s works, such as The Sanctuary, faithfully captured the dramatic intensity and sentimentality of the originals, playing a significant role in popularizing Landseer’s imagery across classes. The condition of this framed engraving is very well preserved with no obvious signs of damage to the frame or the artwork and shows an overall well preserved condition. The measurements of this framed engraving is 23 1/2" x 27 3/4" and the visible artwork measures 7 5/8" x 11 7/8". The collective weight of this engraving is 9lb 2oz.
