The lot features a wonderful 3/4 groove stone war axe head that has been carved in togia from Sitting Bull and is from the Silent Eaters Society with paperwork from Wendell Grangaard. The piece exhibits a three-quarter groove carved stone axe head with blade end, slightly curved flat back and concave flat bottom. The stone axe head is carved in Togia, a Lakota language along all sides. Stone is marked with several various of "Slow / Sitting Bull Chief Hunkpapa - friend Crawler - ceremony - Silent Eaters - Heralder Crawelr - Silent Eater Crawler - Bear Looks Back friend. According to the markings the stone was owned by Sitting Bull and that Crawler is the heralder of the Silent Eaters Society and Bear Looks Back is a member of the Silent Eaters Soceity. Both mentioned are friends to Sitting Bull. Born 1831 to his father Sitting Bull, he was first given the name Jumping Bull (Sitting Bull), growing up with Red Feather, Black Bird, Thunder Hawk,. Bear's Rib, Crow, Gall, Crow King, Cricling Hawk and Strikes the Kettle. His friends called him Slow because of his unusual slow and methodical manner. He used the name Slow for many years until 1845 when his father gave him his own name, Sitting Bull. He was known to mark things as Slow / Sitting bull from 1845 through about the 1870's and after primarily as Sitting Bull with Slow as a secondary name. Dating this piece to circa 1845-1870's. The piece was examined by Wendell Grangaard from The Guns of History and comes with a signed historical paper work and illustrations showing the markings. The stone measures about 4.5" by 2 5/8" by 1.75".
