This lot features a Smith & Wesson .38 Single Action “Mexican Model” (Model of 1880). One of the absolute rarities and most difficult to locate of the frontier S&W revolvers is the 1880 Mexican Model. This distinctive revolver is instantly recognizable by the “flat sided” hammer and the non-integral spur trigger attached separately to the frame- all other spur trigger S&Ws have the guard-less spur rigger integral or forged with the frame and ridges on the hammer sides. Only the Mexican Model has these unusual features. With only about 2000 manufactured and nearly all exported to Mexico, Russia and South America, examples today are rarely encountered. Serial range for this model was between 1-28107 and this example falls in that range with number 24682. Importantly, the serial numbers match on the butt, cylinder, barrel and barrel latch. Surviving examples that have come to light over the years typically show very heavy wear and use. This example still retains much of the fine deep factory blue on the frame, barrel assembly, back strap and butt. The cylinder and high edges show thinning blue wear yet the hammer still shows good case colors. These revolvers were chambered for the .38 S&W Center Fire Cartridge which was considered a potent round at the time. The action on this revolver is strong and tight and has a surprisingly fine bright bore with sharp rifling. The black hard rubber S&W monogram grips are excellent and all markings and patent dates on the 4” barrel are sharp and clear including the correct “MODEL OF 91” stamping (correct even though the Mexican Model is often called the Model 1880). A distinct model and rarity in the Smith & Wesson line with interesting historical importance, even the most advanced S&W collections lack one of these models. Serial Number: 24682. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.*
