Included in this lot is a Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 .44 S&W Russian caliber revolver with factory letter. The Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 was introduced by the factory in 1878 and manufactured until 1898 but continued to be sold until 1912. Significant orders for the New Model No. 3 were made to many countries with Japan accounting for one third of the total production. This beautiful revolver was shipped from the factory on August 3rd, 1896 and delivered to W.F. Sheard in Tacoma, Washington. Sheard was a legendary guide who also invented and patented a number if gunsights, which he later sold to Marbles. A native of Livingston, Montana Sheard would eventually move to Tacoma during the early 1900’s before ultimately retiring in California. This rifle was shipped from the factory with a 6 ½” barrel chambered in .44 S&W Russian. It has a blue finish and checkered black rubber grips. The top of the barrel rib is roll stamped “Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass. U.S.A.” The barrel and frame show a faded patina indicative of the firearms shipment date. Serial Number: 29766.
