Included for your consideration in this lot is an extremely exceptional example of the first commercially successful revolver, which utilized rimfire cartridges - In the form of a Smith & Wesson Number 1, 2nd variation revolver, chambered for .22 Rim Fire. The revolver boasts a fine two-tone factory silver plate, and blue'd finish, fantastic rosewood grips, 7-shot cylinder, a 3 1/4" octagon barrel. and a tip-up action. The revolver additionally uses an underlug extractor - Which was used by tipping up the barrel, removing the cylinder, and simply pushing the spent cartridges out with the extractor. The S&W Number 1 was produced between 1857-1882, with the Second Change being manufactured from the years of 1860-68, in which approximately 110,000 examples were manufactured. The revolver shows few markings, but reads "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS." on the top of the barrel rib, Serial Number "110034" on the bottom of the butt, and "PATENTED APRIL 3, 1855, JULY 5, 1859 & DEC 18, 1860" around the cylinder. This specimen of the S&W Number 1 is the finest example North American Auction Company has encountered, with other high grade Number 1's being valued as high as $2,600 in similar condition. The revolver shows high finish retention, with 85%+ silver retention on the brass frame, and a nice natural patina forming on the steel barrel. Additionally, the rosewood grips show fine condition, with hardly any handling marks - Though there is a small hairline split on the right grip panel. Mechanically, the revolver shows very-good condition, with a tight action, a solid cylinder lock-up, and a strong bore, with good rifling, and only scattered darkness. The revolver qualifies as an Antique Hand Gun, and does NOT require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 110034.
