Featured in this lot is this solid bronze Catholic Church INRI cross circa early 1900s. This cross features a solid bronze construction. The cross shows the crucifixion of Jesus and shows lettering at the top reading, "INRI". The letters INRI are initials for the Latin title that Pontius Pilate had written over the head of Jesus Christ on the cross. The words were "Iesvs Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm", translating to, "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews". Below Jesus is a skull and crossed bones representing death, which is subjected to Jesus on the cross. The symbol is prominent in Orthodox icons of the crucifixion, as well as older Roman Catholic icons. The back of the cross shows the Sacred Heart image. In Catholicism, the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a symbol of Jesus's love for humanity and a sign of his divine and human love for his Father and for people. It's also a symbol of Jesus's interior life, which led him to be willing to sacrifice his life for people. The cross also features a loop at the top for hanging purposes or connecting a chain to. The cross show good condition overall with wear and a patina present from its age and use over the years. No major signs of damage is noted. The cross measures 3/4" L x 4 3/4" W x 9 1/8" H and weighs 8 ounces.
