Featured in this lot is a Vintage South Bend Pocket Watch with a Fahys Montauk case. The serial number inscribed alongside the movement, 494010, indicates the pocket watch was made towards the end of 1907. In 1902, the Columbus Watch Company of Columbus, Ohio, was bought by three Studebaker brothers, George, Clement, and John .M. Studebaker, who were sons of Clement, one of the five famous Studebakers who founded the wagon and car business. The business was moved to South Bend and became the South Bend Watch Company. The pocket watch is a grade 290, a 17 jewel Hunting watch, size 16, Model 1 movement in a nickel finish and pendant setting with black Roman numeral dial. The case is a Fahys Montauk 10K gold-filled, first introduced in February 1898. Joseph Fahys & Co is a watchmaker. During the latter part of the 19th century, the company was the largest manufacturer of gold and silver watch cases in the USA. This pocket watch has a personal engraving inside the case. The pocket watch is in fair to good condition, seconds subdial and dial hour hands are missing, normal wear & tear scratches exhibited throughout, including bezel. Measures .667" diameter.
