Featured in this lot is this early 20th century, Southern Philippines Punyal (Gunong) knife and scabbard. The punyal (or puñal) is a traditional Filipino dagger with deep roots in the southern Philippines, particularly among the Moro tribes of Mindanao and Sulu. This knife features a wood and wrapped aluminum sheath with stamped, geometric designs on the aluminum strips. It features a loop on the sheath to thread a belt through, but shows a crack and is broken. The blade shows a sharpened steel construction with a classic, wavy design near the base (ricasso) of the blade. The handle shows the same stamped aluminum strip near the steel guard and shows a wooden, pistol grip handle. No makers marks or hallmarks are present on the knife. The blade measures 8 1/2" L x 2 1/2" W, while the handle measures 3 7/8" L x 1 3/4" W (at widest point). The entire piece measures 12 3/4" L x 4" W x 1 3/4" D and weighs 12 ounces.
