This is a wonderful parfleche polychrome painted rattle with unique incised pattern of a beast from the Southern Plains Native American Indians. The rattle shows two curved portions of parfleche rawhide which is sewn together with rawhide and painted with mineral pigments of green-blue on the back and red on the front. The front shows an incised, otherwise known as cut or engraved, face which was then painted black along the cuts. At the top of the rattle shows two ties holding badger claws which appear as the beasts horns with yarn ties, medicine bundles an a rolled tin jingle cone. The rattle has a parfleche wrapped wood handle which holds a red ocher dye and is adorned with wrappings and fringe of yarn, straw / twine and trade clothe. The piece is filled with stones and metal objects giving a nice ting rattle. Provenance: From a large American Indian collection in Billings, Montana. Measures 17”L with fringe by 5.25”L from the horns by about 3”D.
