Included in this lot for your consideration is a 136 year old version of the "Gun That Won the West!" - A special order 28" barrel, 2nd Model, Winchester Model 1873 lever-action repeating rifle, chambered in the frontiers most deadly round, the .44-40. According to the standard reference - The Winchester Handbook by George Madis, rifles with barrels longer than 24" are EXTREMELY rare, with only 1201 being made out of 720,000 Model 1873's. The 2nd model was only made from the serial number range of 31,000 - 90,000, further adding to its rarity. A second model can be distinguished by the screwed in dust-cover rail, and also show visible trigger pins that later guns don't have. The rifle is marked in numerous places, reading; "Model 1873" on the top of the rear tang, Serial Number "84238" on the bottom of the rear tang, and "Winchester's Repeating Arms. New Haven. CT. - King's Improvement Patented-March 29, 1856. October 16, 1860." on the top of the barrel, in front of the rear sight. Overall, the rifle shows very-good condition, still retaining a very attractive, deep aged blue patina, sharp roll stamping, fine walnut fixtures, with tight wood to metal contact, and an un-polished brass lifter with an attractive, mellow patina. On top of the beautiful finish, the rifle additionally has its original, un-broken sliding dust cover, intact lever catch, and an adjustable buckhorn rear sight, paired with a blade front. Lastly, the rifle boasts a nice bore, with strong rifling, and a tight action, with strong springs. Typically when you encounter a Model 1873, it shows heavy use, often abuse and showing broken parts - This is truly a collectors grade firearm, crafted in a time before the widespread use of electricity. This rifle - Produced in 1882, qualifies as an Antique Long Gun, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 84238.
