Featured in this lot is a Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle, otherwise known as the "Ram Rod Bayonet Model". The model 1884 ramrod bayonet rifle is the more experimental precursor to the Model 1888 trapdoor ramrod bayonet rifle, sharing similar features and designs. The rifle displays a stamped cartouche reading "SWP 1892" on the walnut stock, indicating it was inspected in that year by Samuel W. Porter. The rifle displays a 31" long round barrel with a ram rod bayonet, showing the double-locking shoulders to engage the locking mechanism. Additionally, the rifle shows the trapdoor butt-plate, a correct adjustable rear leaf sight, correct double stacking sling-swivels, and a one piece guard assembly. The rifle is stamped "316" across the top of the stock, with "14" on the left side of the stock. The lock plate is marked "U.S. Springfield" with a eagle and shield insignia, the top of the trapdoor is marked "US Model 1884". Overall, the rifle shows very good, original condition. The firearm doesn't show any signs of re-finishing or sanding to the walnut fixtures and it boasts a warm brown patina across the piece. The rifle additionally has good mechanical condition, with a tight action, and strong rifling. Serial Number: 541129. This firearm qualifies as an Antique and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
