Very fine Model 1884 Springfield .45-70 caliber cavalry saddle ring carbine, serial number 448860. This is a nice carbine made in 1889 with correct sling ring bar. It also has the Model 1884 Buffington ladder rear sight that is adjustable for windage and long range elevation with either “peep” aperture or “V” notch for sighting, etc. This is a true original U.S. issued carbine made for the Indian Wars. Uncleaned, naturally aged metal has a smooth dark aged blue/brown patina and shows no evidence abuse or cleaning. This as-issued carbine has the correct U.S. MODEL 1884” marked breech block, with the correct “U.S. SPRINGFIELD” marked lock plate with eagle motif and all correct barrel “VP” over “eagle head” proof marks on the original 22 inch barrel. It has excellent mechanics and excellent bore displaying fine rifling. The walnut stock is in particularly excellent condition retaining two crisp inspection cartouches at the wrist and a light circle P cartouche behind the lower tang. The butt plate has the correct sliding door to cover the compartment for a jointed cleaning rod and this example retains its three-piece rod. The steel butt plate is also correctly “U.S.” marked on the top portion along with a “12” stamping which was no doubt a rack or unit number. This is the standard model that was used in every major engagement from the Battle of the Rosebud and Battle of the Little Bighorn to Wounded Knee. This is a fine, uncleaned, attic-condition, attractive example with wonderful Western
Indian Wars history. Serial Number: 448860. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
