Offered in this lot is a Stag Horn Hickory Walking Stick, circa mid 20th century. Ex-Boston area estate collection. This unique cane is specially designed for the taller user. A large stag horn, 9.5"L x 9"W x 1.25" thick, is mounted to a solid hickory wood shaft. Stags are fully grown, often the most powerful and aggressive males in a deer herd. The antler tine comes from the main beam at a ninety degree angle creating a natural handle for the cane. Antlers are true bone, made of a specialized form of bone tissue, and have no hollow core. The polished appearance comes when the stag actively rubs his antlers on trees and vegetation to fully remove the itchy, peeling velvet. This process both polishes the antlers and marks the animal's territory. Hickory wood is known for its exceptional hardness, strength, and shock resistance, making it one of the hardest domestic hardwoods available. It is a dense, tough wood. Hickory trees are native to the Eastern United States, with their range extending from the Northeast and the Midwest down to the South and into the Gulf Coast states. The cane is in well preserved condition, the antler burr and rose are pronounced. Shaft is solid, no marring noted to the cane. Measures 42.5"H x 9"W, weight is 1lb, 14oz.
