This is an original 19th Century photograph of Standing Rock Indian Reservation schoolhouse with Indian Agency superintendent W.E. Meagley taken by J.C. Grabill likely circa 1880’s. John C.H. Grabill (1849-1903) was a noted American photographer, known for his historical photographs of South Dakota (Deadwood). He had a Studio in Deadwood, South Dakota as well as other locations. The back of the image is marked in pencil, “Standing Rock Ind. Res, SD Papa (W.E. Meagley) in door. J.C. Grabill”. The image shows W. E. Meagley the Standing Rock Indian Agency superintendent in the doorway sitting in front of dozens of Sioux children in front of their schoolhouse. This large format albumen photograph boudoir card image is one of the only representations of this image documented to exist. W.E. Meagley is documented in various U.S. Department of the Interior booklets from the late 19th to early 20th century. The image is very similar to in format and size to another Standing Rock Reservation by J.C.H. Grabill sold by Cowboy Joe and the 1891 Photograph by J.C.H. Grabill Deadwood, SD sold in 2005 for $7,000. Rare image attributed to John C. Grabill (1849-1903) as marked on the back, a rare image of Standing Rock Indian Reservation Schools in the 1880’s, very few images of such are documented.
