Featured in this lot is this double hanging kerosene lamp made by The Angle Lamp Company in New York circa 1890-1910s. A revised understanding of burner placement led to the Angle Lamp's innovative design for kerosene lighting. With less undershadow, this design modification allowed for more direct downward illumination. Thomas Mara Fell was the creator. On January 5, 1829, Thomas Mara Fell was born in Shoreditch, London, England. On November 6, 1888, his first patent, number 392,418, was authorized. The lamp body, which holds the detachable oil reservoir and to which the burner(s) are attached, the burner(s), and the lamp glass, which is made up of an elbow and a chimney-shade, are the main parts of the Angle Lamp. Single and double burner options were available for the wall-mounted models. Typically, hanging models had two, three, or four burner options. This is a double burning hanging lamp. The main middle section where the kerosene basin sits, shows a floral repousse design around the entire lamp. The two burners are on opposite sides of each other, with both featuring a knob to change the length of the wick, thus changing the power of the flame. The top of the lamp reads, "The Angle Lamp Co. N. Y. / Patented in the U.S. and Foreign Countries". The lamp shows good condition overall and is only missing the two glass chimney chutes that go over the the burners. No obvious signs of damage are present. The lamp measures 9 1/4" L x 12" W x 19 1/4" H and weighs 2 pounds and 6 ounces.
