This is a RARE complete two volume set of "The Congo and the Founding of its Free State; A Story of Work and Exploration" written by Henry M. Stanley and published in 1885. The books profile the history of The Congo in which Stanley claimed for the Belgian King in the 1870's. Each volume features a wonderfully illustrated and gilt decorated cover with numerous illustrations and fold out maps. There is a folding map in each of the pockets inside the rear covers as well. The books are in good condition. Each one measures 6.5" x 9". The folding maps are 22" x 36".
