Featured in this lot is a First Edition of "The Courtship of Miles Standish and Other Poems" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1859 2nd printing, publisher TICKNOR AND FIELDS Boston. An important Longfellow volume with some of his most famous poems. Longfellow claimed that his tragi-comic ballad of a Pilgrim love triangle was inspired by true events; he was himself descended from the Plymouth Pilgrims, including the real-life namesakes of his poem’s protagonists.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was an American poet and educator. His original works include the poems "Paul Revere's Ride", "The Song of Hiawatha", and "Evangeline". He was the first American to completely translate Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy and was one of the fireside poets from New England, and was one of the most widely known and best-loved American poets of the 19th century. He achieved a level of national and international prominence previously unequaled in the literary history of the United States and is one of the few American writers honored in the Poets’ Corner of Westminster Abbey. The front endpaper has a quill pen note to the first owner, Vira Le Stevens, dated June 19, 1862. The original publisher brown cloth bound gold gilt embossed hardcover is in very good condition for it's age, scuffing and staining observed on covers. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and foxing. Measures 5"W x 7.5"L x .75"D.
