This lot features a Rare 1867 First Edition, "The Life of Sam Houston", by Charles Edwards Lester, published by John E. Potter and Company, Philadelphia, PA. "The Life of Sam Houston; The Hunter, Patriot, and Statesman of Texas, The Only Authentic Memoir of Him Ever Published." Samuel Houston was an American general and statesman who played an important role in the Texas Revolution. He served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas and was one of the first two individuals to represent Texas in the United States Senate. Charles Edwards Lester or C. Edwards Lester (1815-1890) was an American author and diplomat. Lester was born in Griswold, Connecticut, and was a descendant of Jonathan Edwards. He was of a roving disposition and traveled widely in the United States and Europe. The olive coloured clothbound stamped gold gilt hardcover is in nice condition with an illustrated carved floral cover design with vignette of Houston on horseback on front cover. Scuffing noted to cover edges. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and slight foxing. Measures 7.5"L x 5.25"W x 1.5"D, and the weight is 1lb 6oz.*
