This book is a chronological history of George Washington's life with the year indicated at the top of each page. His life is covered from birth in 1732 to death in 1799; detailed coverage started in 1747, when he was 15. Probably the most wide-spread and read book on the life of Washington, until Douglas Southall Freeman in the 1950s. Inscription from first owner on front endpaper dated Dec. 25, 1883. This book endeavors to make accessible to a wider audience the inspiring life story of General Washington. In this single-volume work, Bancroft not only delves into Washington's individual life but also into crucial historical events that significantly influenced him. The author leans heavily on Judge Marshall for historical facts, but also incorporates inputs from other eminent historians like Doctors Ramsay and Gordon, as well as first-hand accounts from those who were intimately associated with Washington. Utilizing an accessible writing style, Bancroft's account, caters more to the general populace rather than the academic elite.
