Featured in this lot is a First Edition of “The Navajo Indians” by Dane Coolidge and Mary Roberts Coolidge, 1930, Houghton Mifflin Company Boston and New York publishers, illustrated with mostly photographs. An overview of the Navajo people in 29 chapters organized into 5 parts: Legend and History, Life and Custom, Arts and Crafts, Mythology and Ceremony, The Navajos and the Government. The information in the book comes almost wholly from the Navajo People themselves. Three prominent Navajos are credited in the preface of the book, Nils Hogner (artist and trader), Long Mustache (medicine man), and Louis Watchman (interpreter). Dane Coolidge was an American author, naturalist, and photographer. He wrote fiction, non-fiction, and articles featuring the American West. He wrote short stories for magazines and made illustrations. Mary Roberts Coolidge was an American sociologist and author, as well as collegiate professor at both Wellesley and Stanford. Navajo and Hopi Reservations map endpapers. Includes attached and loose newspaper articles regarding Navajo life. The orange coloured cloth bound stamped illustrated textured hardcover exhibits slight scuffing to edges, fading to spine colour, loose spine. Intact deckled fore and bottom edges, painted top edge. Some writing noted on pages, age tanning throughout. Measures 5.75"W x 8.75"L x 1.5"D, weight 1lb, 12oz.
