Knut Nicolaus was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1940. He was trained to be a picture restorer in Munich, Florence, and London. From 1965 to 1986 he was restorer-in-chief at the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum in Braunschweig. Nicolaus is a world-renowned expert in issues relating to picture conservation, damage and restoration. In 1986 the college of Applied Sciences in Cologne appointed him to develop a new faculty, Restoration and Conservation of Art and Cultural Works. This is an indispensable book on the subject, and it is truly in magnificent condition.
