Featured in this lot is a 1908 illustrated hardcover of “The Yellowstone National Park Historical and Descriptive” by Hiram Martin Chittenden. This is the Fifth Edition Revised and Enlarged. The book features a comprehensive description of America's first national park, Yellowstone with its wildlife and vegetation. Hiram Martin Chittenden (1858–1917) was an American engineer and historian, Chittenden's 1902 "The American Fur Trade of the Far West" has been highly influential among historians of the West. He authored "The Yellowstone National Park Historical and Descriptive" during his first years working at Yellowstone and was in exclusive charge of the road work and general improvements, the basalt arch at the northern entrance and the single-span Chittenden Memorial Bridge (formerly the Melan arch bridge) across the Yellowstone River. The book contains numerous maps and illustrations, including a fold out map on the inside backcover. The blue cloth bound cover has gilt gold lettering on the cover and along the spine. Scuffing and fading noted to covers and edges. Intact pages indicate slight age tanning, top and fore edge staining and foxing, no other obvious damage noted.
