For your consideration are Minnie Hart's Letters of Recommendation from the Tombstone School District, 1891. Provenance: Tombstone Western Heritage Museum, Tombstone, Arizona. The legacy of S. L. "Lum" Hart as gunsmith to the cowboys, gamblers, lawmen, and gunfighters of Tombstone cannot be over estimated. Today a firearm with the "S.L. Hart" stamp is almost priceless. Hart's daughter Minnie Jane taught school at Tombstone's first school house. During her time in the Tombstone school district, Minnie not only taught "in the higher grades" but was also the Vice-Principal. Minnie taught in Tombstone until S.L. moved the family to Tucson, where she again was a teacher for almost four years. She replaced the first woman schoolteacher in Tombstone, Sarah Herring Sorin, who was the librarian and principal. After teaching, Sorin became Arizona's first woman attorney and the first woman to try a case in front of the US Supreme Court unassisted by a male attorney. These letters of recommendation commend Minnie for her service to the Tombstone School District and the Tombstone community with one signed by the school trustees and the other signed by the superintendent. Great pieces of Old West Tombstone history! The letters of recommendation are in nicely preserved condition in a clear protective plastic sleeve. Letters are in good overall condition, age tanning consistent with age and use. Each measures 8.5"W x 14"L, sleeve is 11.375"W x 17.25"L, weight is U6.
